Biography of Robert Ellison

HERITAGE NO :
Robert Ellison

GLASS CUTTER

Robert was a local lad who was born in St Helens on April the 2nd, 1864. In 1891 he was living at 22 Traverse Street, Parr, St. Helens with his widowed mother and his siblings.

Robert was a regular member of the St. Helens A team. His playing position of full back was well and truly in the hands of Saints’ legend Tommy Foulkes. Consequently, first team opportunities were extremely rare. He made his debut in the away fixture against Rochdale Hornets on the 11th of March 1893. The Saints won by 5 points to nil that day, thanks to a try by Freddie Little and a goal by Tommy Foulkes, who was playing in the centre position. He appeared in four first team matches; the final outing occurring on the 2nd of February 1894 in the away fixture against top outfit, Tyldesley. The Saints won a gripping contest that day by 4 points to nil, with Harry May dropping a magnificent goal to seal the victory.

Outside rugby he married Elizabeth Ann Anderton in April 1901 and they went on to raise two sons, Robert and Fred. Whilst living at 142 Morley Street, St. Helens he signed up to join the 2nd South Lancashire Volunteers in 1914 at the age of 50. In 1939 he had retired from cutting glass and was living at 6 Gibbons Avenue in the town, just a stone’s throw away fro the ground in Knowsley Road.

He died in St. Helens in October 1941 at the age of 77.
