HERITAGE NO : Arthur Simcox MASTER BUTCHER FROM WEST BROM Arthur was born in Smethwick, West Bromwich on the 14th of March 1868. The Simcox family to St. Helens in the late 1870s. In 1881 Arthur was living with his family at 25 Barton Street, St. Helens. At the age of 13 he was working as a glass maker in a local glass factory, His father John was similarly occupied. Arthur had two brothers who also played for the Saints, James and John. They must hold a record for any three brothers who have all donned the colours of St. Helens RFC. That record is, in total they only played four matches between them. Arthur made a single appearance on the 4th of February 1893 in an away fixture against Lancaster. You can imagine the recruitment line: “Arthur, can I have half a pound of pigs liver and a bone for the dog? Oh aye, we’re playing Lancaster on Saturday, do you own a pair of rugby boots?” We jest of course. Arthur and his siblings also played for the Saints’ Reserves team. On that day in Lancaster the Saints won by 2 points to nil thanks to a try by the irrepressible Bob Doherty. Arthur played in the Centres that day. Arthur married Lilian Frodsham in St. Helens in 1898. They had a daughter named Millicent. In 1911 the family were living at 140 Speakman Road in the salubrious Dentons Green area of the town and Arthur was recorded as a master butcher. He died in St. Helens on the 15th of November 1948 at the age of 80. |
