Biography of John Little

HERITAGE NO :
John Thomas Little

IRISH MINER

John was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1868. His father, also named John, was a railway signalman. The Little family moved from Belfast in the late 1880s and moved to live in Lascelles Street, St. Helens. He took up employment as a coal miner. His brothers, Richard and Freddie moved with him and also followed him onto the Saints’ rugby pitch.

John was a forward who played two matches for the Saints. His debut was on the 4th of February 1893 in an away fixture against Lancaster. The Saints won that day by 2 points to nil, thanks to a try from Bob Doherty. His second and final appearance was another away fixture in Liverpool against Tuebrook. That match was won by the Saints by 8 points to 4. All the points for St. Helens were attributed to 2 drop goals by Tommy Foulkes. We believe that John also played for the Saints’ Reserves team.

He married Esther Dagnall on the 24th of November 1889 in Sutton, St. Helens. They subsequently had four children. In 1911 the family were living at 39 Manor Street, St Helens and John was working at the local coal mine. He was a private in World War One and discharged on the 23rd of August 1917 as disabled. He died in St. Helens in April 1934 at the age of 66.
