Biography of George Shipley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : George William Shipley GREAT WAR CASUALTY George was born in Sheffield on the 2nd of August 1874. His father, Thomas, was a silversmith. In 1891 George was still living at 12 Brocco Street, Sheffield with his parents and four siblings. At some point over the next twelve months he moved to St. Helens leaving his family behind in Yorkshire. It was also evident that his father was training his son to follow him into the Silversmith trade. George also left this line of work in Sheffield. He made his debut for the Saints on the 26th of November 1892 against Morecambe. The match ended in a victory for the Saints and the eighteen year old played in the forwards. He must have been a talented played because he proceeded to play another 20 games for the Club and scored a try against Stockport on March 25th, 1893. The Saints lost that day and George scored the only points for St. Helens. His final match was the last game of the 1892/3 season against Rochdale. The Saints won that game by 10 points to nil. It is quite remarkable that George came into the side in November and played in virtually every game until the conclusion of what appears to be his only season at Knowsley Road. That said George stayed in St. Helens for the next 10 years. In 1911, George is living at 4 Vernon Street in St. Helens. And working at Forster’s Glass works as a bottle machinist. Furthermore, he had found a wife, Margaret, who emanated from Glasgow. Certainly we know that his movements were shrouded in mystery at times. It is clear that soon after this date George and Margaret moved to live in Bridgerton, Glasgow, Margaret’s hometown. What is more, George signed up to join the Labour Corps of the Highland Light Infantry. It is sad to report that PTE 369845 George William Shipley died in France on the 26th of March 1918 at the age of 43. He was buried at Doullens Cemetery in France. His widow, Margaret, received a War Gratuity of £17. |
