 HERITAGE NO : William Robert Hesmondalgh AMBLESIDE Universally know as Bob he was born on December 28th 1869 in Ambleside in the Lake District.. His father was a greengrocer from Ribchester, Lancashire. The family were raised near Stock Bridge close to the lakeside town of Ambleside. Bob was one of a significant number of Kendal Hornets’ players who came to St. Helens to progress their rugby talent with the Saints. Many of these lads from Westmorland were invited by St. Helens RFC club captain a fellow county man Billy Cross. He was a a classy centre with a good rugby pedigree. His reputation was based on strong running, try scoring with an ability to kick drop goals as well. He made his debut for St. Helens on the opening match of the 1892/3 season. The high profile match was against great rivals Wigan at Knowsley Road. The Saints lost that day but William continued to claim a place in the team for another ten matches in the early part of that season. In these games Bob scored tries against Lancaster and Duckinfield and kicked a drop goal in his final match for the Saints against Morecambe on the 5th of November, 1892. We are not privy as to why Bob ended his spell with the Saints at this juncture. Possibly, he suffered a bad injury or he possibly wanted to return north to pursue his fledging career as a printer’s cutter in more familiar surroundings. Bob married Emily Jane Hill in July 1894. The couple went on to have seven children. His career path led Bob to Leicester where he was to spend the rest of his life. William Robert Hesmondalgh died in Leicester on the 12th September 1953 at the age of 53. |
