Biography of Leonard Learoyd

HERITAGE NO :
Leonard Kelso Learoyd

ALWAYS ON THE MOVE

One of the former Saints with a hint of mystery. On the face of it his connections with the town of St Helens could be best described as somewhat tenuous.

Leonard was born into a wealthy family on the 1st of July 1870. His birthplace was Huddersfield. In 1891 he was living with his parents at 83 Manchester Road, North Meols, Southport. His father, Samuel was living off his own means.

Leonard played three matches for the Saints over 6 days in April 1892. These were the final three matches of the campaign. Leonard made his debut on Monday the 25th of April against Graham’s Select, a team selected by the Saints’ Westmorland forward James Pasha Graham. It is possible that James knew Leonard from somewhere and handed out an invitation to try his luck with the Saints. It was a Charity match and Learoyd was recorded as a guest player. The Saints won the day by 6 points to nil thanks to a brace of tries from Billy Cross and a try from Bob Doherty. On the following Thursday the Saints entertained top Club Liverpool, this time in a Benefit game. The Saints won by 20 points to nil with another brace of tries from Billy Cross augmenting tries from Joe Brownbill, Peter Dale, Sam Jones and a further brace from John Appleton. Doherty and Dale chipped in with a goal apiece. The final match of the season two days later saw the Saints travel to the formidable Tyldesley team featuring England international player, Buff Berry. The match ended in a win for the Bongers by 10 points to nil. In all three matches Leonard played on the right wing.

Outside rugby Leonard moved to Oldham in the late 1890s where he was employed as bank clerk. In 1911 he was living at 3 River Bank, Aynam Road Kendal. Four months later Leonard died in Harrogate on the 13th of August 1911 at the age of 41.
