Biography of Joseph Craven |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Joseph Craven CHEMICAL LABOURER AND ULTIMATE SURVIVOR Joseph was a a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1867. His father, also named Joseph, was a joiner from Richmond in Yorkshire who had moved to St. Helens in the 1860s. The town of St Helens in the second half of the nineteenth century was noted for its chemical industries and unfortunately the concomitant pollution. In 1891 his family was living at 57 Peter Street, St. Helens. Their house was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. We have only one recorded first team appearance for Joseph in the home victory over Leicester on the 16th of April 1892. The 6 points to nil victory was hard earned and the Saints prevailed thanks to tries by club legends Bob Doherty and Peter Dale. It is highly likely that Joseph also played regularly for the St. Helens Reserves team in that period. Joseph married Ellen Boardman on the 15th of January 1891 and they proceeded to have three children. At some point over the next decade Joseph and Ellen decided to move to Darlington in the North East of England. In 1911 he was living at 30 Yarm Road, darlington and working as a school caretaker in a slightly less polluted environment. He died in Darlington in July 1965 at the grand old age of 98, doubtless with many a tale left behind him. |
