 HERITAGE NO : Robert Edward Pickles SHORT DIFFICULT LIFE Robert Edward Pickles was born in Rochdale in January 1871. His father, also named Robert, was a warehouseman died when Robert Edward was just 7 years old. He went to live with his uncle in the Spotland area of Rochdale. At ten years old Robert already had a job as a woollen piecer. In the 1880s Robert moved to St. Helens and gained employment as a stone mason. He lived at 61 Ell Bess Lane, Sutton St. Helens. His first match was against Sale on the 13th of February 1892. Robert played in the forwards that day and the Saints were victorious. He went on to play 14 matches for the club and scored a solitary try against Duckinfield in September 1892. His final appearance was a victory over Lancaster on the 20th of January 1894. Robert married local girl Ellen Hensley in 1894 and they soon had two children, Edward and Helen. Robert died suddenly in March 1902 at the age of 31. His wife was pregnant at the time and gave birth to Robert Junior one month later. Tragically, the baby was only to survive for a few weeks. |
