Biography of Mathias Barton |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Mathias Barton TRY ON DEBUT Mathias was a local lad who was born in St Helens in August 1870. His father, James, was a labourer. In the 1870s the family lived in Stanhope Street close to the centre of St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. On the 30th of August 1890, Mathias married Esther Jane Twist in St. Helens. They would have two sons, Henry and Norman. In 1891, the young couple lived 15 St. Pauls Street in the town and Mathias was working as a blacksmith. Mathias made played his only match for the first team on the 13th of February, 1892. The Saints were victorious over Sale by 12 points to 2 thanks to tries from Bob Doherty, Ned Ashcroft and debutant Mathias Barton. It seems remarkable that this was his only game for the first team. That said, he was also likely to have played for the Saints’ A team in this period. In 1911 Mathias, Esther and their two sons were living at 46 Albion Street, St. Helens. Mathias died in St. Helens in October 1924 at the age of 54. |
