HERITAGE NO : Ralph Fildes SILVERER Ralph was a local lad who was born in St Helens in January 1870. His father, Harry, was an engine driver in a local colliery. In 1891 he was living at 112 Park Road. Parr, St. Helens. Ralph worked as a silverer in a glass factory. His debut was an away fixture on Boxing Day 1891 against Wigan. He played in the forwards that day in a beaten side, the Saints lost by five points to four. Ralph scored a try in that narrow defeat. The other try for the Saints came from the irrepressible Bob Doherty. Ralph was a guest in the game, normally he featured for St. Helens Recs. Another Recs loanee on the field was a young Billy Briers. Ralph guested once more for the Saints in a Charity affair against Liverpool on the 20th of April 1893. The Saints were victorious by 17 points to nil and yet again Ralph was on the scoresheet with a try. Ralph married Elizabeth Webster in the Spring of 1895 and on the 29 June in the same year, the couple emigrated to Canada where they settled in Montreal. Ralph died in that location on the 29th of May 1929 at the age of 59. |
