 HERITAGE NO : Frank Brown STOKED Joseph was a local lad who was born in Sutton, St Helens in March 1866. His father, Thomas, was a labourer. By 1891, Frank’s father had died and Frank was living with his widowed mother 6 Burton Head Road, Sutton, St. Helens. He was working as a stoker at the time. Frank was a forceful forward who played 17 matches for the Saints in the 1890s. On the first day of the 1893/4 season, he made his first team debut against Holbeck on the 2nd of September 1893. Before a crowd of 4000 the Saints were victorious that day by 17 points to 4, thanks to a hat trick from Tom Sudlow and singleton touchdowns from Billy Cross and Peter Dale. Tommy Foulkes landed just one conversion. His final outing was in the fixture against Dewsbury on the 10th November 1894. Before a disappointing crowd of just 2000, the Saints overcame the Dewsbury outfit by 9 points to nil. Bob Doherty, Joe Brownbill and Peter Dale scored tries for the home team. By 1911 Frank was married to Elizabeth and had a collection of five children. He had a new job as a brick maker and was living at 7 Manville Street, Peasley Cross, St Helens. He died in St. Helens in April 1939 at the age of 73. |
