HERITAGE NO : Thomas Joseph Smith SCAFFOLDER HAS DAY TO REMEMBER Thomas Smith was born in St. Helens on the 20th Of October 1871. In 1881 he was living with his widowed mother, Mary at 29 Atherton Street, St.Helens. Ten years later he had moved just a few houses down the same street to live at number 43. Thomas was a forward in the Reserves team at St. Helens. He played just one match for the first team but it was a day to remember. On the 24th of October 1891 the Saints were on a tour and facing Rockcliffe, a rugby club based in Whitley Bay, Northumberland. It was four days after his 20th birthday but Thomas did not receive a belated present. St. Helens RFC lost that day by 14 points to nil. By 1901 he had married Mary Ann Greenalgh and they were on their way to raising two daughters. They lived at 38 Chorley Street close to the town centre of St. Helens. Thomas was working as a brick setter’s labourer. According to the 1939 Census he had moved to live at 22 Talbot Street and worked as a scaffolder. He died in St. Helens in October 1957 at the age of 87. |
