SAD END FOR A STALWART

John was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 5th of May 1865. His father, Thomas was a coal miner. John followed his sooty footsteps down the local pits of St. Helens.in 1891 he was living in Elephant Lane, Thatto Heath, St. Helens. He married Elizabeth May in 1898 and they moved to 4 Devon Street, St. Helens. The couple soon had two sons, John and Thomas.

John played for the team in the early 1890s. He proved to be a rugged forward and a very strong tackler. He made his debut against Birkenhead Wanderers on the 26th of September, 1891. John became a vital member of the pack of forwards and up to the start of the Northern Union era he made 75 appearances for the Saints.

NORTHERN UNION ERAIn the early days of the Northern Union John Kilshaw played a further 11 matches for the Saints between February 1896 and February 1897 but his health started to decline and his rugby days were over.

Following his playing days John suffered with his health and found himself incarcerated in a hospital in the early years of the twentieth century. He sadly passed away in St Helens at the young age of 40 in March 1905.
