 HERITAGE NO : Forward Johnson NO PERSONAL DETAILS The Johnson surname was a particular problem for our research team. There were 56 male Johnsons in the area at the time and a good number were of playing age. We have labelled this chap as Forward Johnson because that was his playing position and we wanted to differentiate him from, you guessed it, Back Johnson. The forward played just three matches for the Saints. His debut was against Wigan in a drawn affair on the 12th of September 1891. Indeed neither team scored a single point. His next match was against Sale when the Saints whipped the boys from Cheshire by a resounding 22 points to nil. His final outing was against Morecambe on the 5th of November 1892. The Saints secured an away victory by 11 points to 9. The Saints trailed by 9 points at half time but a second half performance was capped off by tries from Bob Doherty and JJ Gill. Tom Fouls chipped in with a goal and Bob Hesmondalgh booted over a valuable drop goal worth four points, I know! |
