Of all the 365 players that we know about, Tom Hughes has provided the greatest level of frustration and ignorance. The surname certainly indicates an Welsh heritage. We know that quite a few Welshmen moved to work in the coal mines of St. Helens in the later years of the nineteenth century with many emanating in the Holywell area of North Wales. Our best guess is that the forward was named Tom Hughes who was born in Northrop, North Wales in 1868. This forward did indeed move to work in the local pits. If we are correct Tom lived at 29 Wilson Street in St. Helens.

Hughes made his debut on the 5th of September 1891 in a home fixture against Ulverston. The match, which ended in a draw, was played at Knowsley Road. At the final whistle neither team had scored a single point. The forward played a total of 41 matches for the Saints over the next 13 months and appears to have been an ever-present member of the Saints’ pack of forwards. His final outing was on the 8th of October 1892 when the Saints travelled to face top side Aspull. The match ended in a four all draw with the Saints’ points coming from the boot of Tom Ludlow who dropped a valuable 4 point goal.
