Biography of Thomas Greenhough

HERITAGE NO :
Thomas Greenough

TWO DRAWN MATCHES IN APRIL

Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 7th of February 1867. His father was a coal miner but died when Thomas was a young boy. In 1881 Thomas was living at 39 Langtree Street in the centre of St. Helens and working as a glass maker.

Thomas is recorded as playing in five first team matches for the Saints. Two games occurred in April 1891 and remarkably both encounters ended in draws. His debut was against Rochdale St. Clements on the 25th of April with neither team managing to score a try or goal. Thomas played in the pack of forward for his last match on the 30th of April in an away fixture at Salford. Again neither team could muster a try or goal, though the Saints scored 3 minors to nil but it was not sufficient to be declared the winners.

In March 1893 Thomas married Annie Woodward and they went on to have 5 children. The couple settled at 5 Grafton Street in the town close to the Saints’ ground at Knowsley Road. The 1911 Census found Thomas in Abercromby Hospital in Liverpool. He died in July 1918 at the age of 51.
