Biography of Jimmy Pilkington

HERITAGE NO :
Jimmy Pilkington

RECS LEGEND ALSO PLAYED FOR THE SAINTS

Jimmy was born on the 25th of September 1866 in St. Helens. His father, James, was a glassmaker. He married Henrietta Walsh in 1898 and they went on to raise 5 children. Jimmy was a glass beveller by trade and his local team of choice probably indicated that his job was with Pilkingtons Brothers. The family lived at 22 North Road in the town.

He made his only appearance on the wing for the Saints on the 16th of April, 1891 in a victory over Birkenhead Wanderers. Jimmy showed his class that day by scoring a sparkling try.

However, week by week Jimmy was a supreme half-back and a prolific try-scorer for St. Helens Recs, who became that club’s first-ever Lancashire representative in 1890. He had an enormous hand-span, enabling him to stoop at maximum pace and pick up the football on his way to the try-line. In one match, against Holbeck at Boundary Road, he did his ‘party trick’ so often in the first half that the opposition insisted on the ball being measured at half-time! Needless to say the ball was of standard size, unlike Jimmy’s hands! He once scored a magnificent hat-trick against a powerful Wigan side at Boundary Road, whereupon he was presented with a commemorative cap by the visitors.

Jimmy represented West Lancs and Border Towns Union against Westmorland at Kendal on Saturday 23rd November 1886 as a half-back. Ted Foreman of the Saints played in the three-quarters together with William ‘Monsey’ Parr.

Jim also played at scrum half in the victory over Westmorland, at Aspull on 2nd January 1888. On Wednesday the 6th February 1889 Jimmy featured against South East Lancashire at Wigan at half-back. Basnett of the Saints was in the same team.

Jimmy died on the 30th of May, 1916 at the age of 49. His death was registered in Prescot.
