Biography of John Pullar

HERITAGE NO :
John Pullar

John was born in St. Helens in July 1871. He was raised by his mother Anna and step-father, Edward Ross. His step father, Edward, was a Saints’ stalwart in the early years of the club, together with his brother Charlie. The Ross brothers were instrumental in giving the Club much stability in the transformation years from the Original St. Helens RFC through the St. Helens Rangers years right through to the Club setting up home at Knowsley Road. Moreover, it could be maintained that the Ross brothers were the only constant stars in the Saints’ sky in the first 30 years of its existence.

We are unsure if John played in the reserves team but he is only recorded as playing one first team game for the Saints. John’s singleton match was against top side Aspull on the 24th of January 1891. The match was played at Knowsley Road and the game ended in a draw. John was selected on the wing for the Saints.

John married local girl Elizabeth Aspinall in1895. Initially, in the 1890s, John worked as a time-keeper clerk and lived at 51, New Cross Street in St. Helens with this young family. However, by 1901, John had become a commercial traveller and moved to reside in Station Road, Blackrod, Lancashire. The 1911 census tells us that he was a commercial trader for an oil and grease manufacturer and lived at 4, Fernleigh, Horwich. John had two sons: John, an iron moulder, and Harry, who, at the time, was still a scholar.

His travels eventually took the family to Holderness on the east coast of Yorkshire. John Pullar died there in July 1938 at the age of 67.
