 HERITAGE NO : James Rennie TRAGIC END FOR YOUNG PLAYER WITH GREAT POTENTIAL James was born on the 8th of November, 1870. His father, Robert, was an engine driver. The family lived at 24 New Street in the Sutton district of St. Helens. James found employment in the nearby Lea Green Colliery. He made his debut against Blackley Rangers own Christmas Day, 1890. James played in the forwards and the Saints were victorious. He showed great potential and soon gained a regular place in the team. Over the following 21 matches James scored 5 tries and kicked four goals and a drop goal. This was at a time when forwards did not feature very often on the scoresheets. His last match for the Club was on the 2nd of April, 1892 when the Saints gained the upper hand over a talented Kendal Hornets team winning by 14 points to 2. On the 7th of April, 1892 clocked on as normal at Lea Green Colliery, where he was a ‘balancer’. The official report stated that: “Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was packing when a stone fell from an old endway injuring his neck. He succumbed to the injuries received on April 14th.” This was just one week after the unfortunate accident. |
