Biography of David Rankin

HERITAGE NO :
David Rankin

ONE MATCH

David was born in Liverpool on the 7th of May 1870. His father, John was a publican at the Trafalgar Public House in Waterloo Road, Liverpool. Following the death of his father, David moved to St. Helens in the early 1880s with his mother. and found work as a labourer in an ironworks factory. The family lived at 2 Tontine Street and his widowed mother set up a lodgings house to make ends meet. His older brother, Martin, also moved at the same time and played for the Saints as a forward.

David’s first match was an away fixture against Duckinfield on the 22nd of November, 1890. He played in the forwards that day and the game ended in a draw. That was his only match in the Saints’ colours.

By 1891, David’s mother had relocated her lodgings house to 13 Old Cross Street in St. Helens. The Census held that year shows that the McLaughlin family were resident in her boarding house. Daniel McLaughlin was one of those boarders, the very same chap who had played 65 matches for the Saints up to 1889. It is quite easy to see how David might have been recruited to try his hand at rugby with the Saints.

Sadly, David died in early January 1892 and was buried in St. Helens Cemetery on the 16th of that month. He was just 21 years old and had barely started living his adult life. It goes to show how fragile life was in those days. A fact reinforced by the death of his mother’s lodger and fellow Saints’ player, Daniel McLaughlin who passed away himself at the age of 30 in January 1896.
