Biography of Abel Hollingworth |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Abel Hollingworth CHESHIRE LAD Abel was born on the second of September 1869 in Mellor, Cheshire. His father, Alfred, was a carder working in a textile mill. As a teenager Abel moved from Cheshire to St. Helens to work in the town’s thriving glass industry. In the late nineteenth century there was a significant economic migration from Cheshire to the rapidly expanding industrial towns and cities of South Lancashire. Abel was to remain in St. Helens for the rest of his life. Census records show Abel living in Harris Street in the town and working as a stoker in a glass furnace. He made his debut for St. Helens on the 20th of September 1890 and he played in the full back position that day. The opponents that day were Kendal and the Saints were triumphant at the new ground in Knowsley Road. Indeed, that match was only the third fixture played by the Saints on their new turf. This was the only first team match we have found where Abel was a participant. Abel remained single throughout his life. He died in St. Helens on the 23rd of May 1949 at the age of 79. |
