Biography of Thomas Hull |

HERITAGE NO : Thomas Hull MINERAL WATER BOTTLER Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 9th of November 1866. His father, William, was a joiner. Thomas was selected for just one first team match though it is highly likely that he played for the Saints’ Reserves team. The game was against Widnes and took place on the 17th of December, 1891. Unfortunately for Thomas and the Saints lost that day by the narrow margin of five points to 4. Thomas played as a centre three-quarter that day. In 1891, Thomas was living with his parents at 5 Junction Lane in Sutton, St. Helens. He was employed as a bottler of mineral water. For those who could afford it there was a steady demand for clean bottled water in Victorian times especially following sporadic outbreaks of cholera and the realisation that this was linked to an infected water supply. In 1911 we catch up with Thomas in Chorley where he had swapped mineral water for beer. He was living and working as the publican of one of the oldest public houses in the town, the Duke of York. He lived there with his wife Winifred nee Phythian and their daughter Mary Agnes. Some time later Thomas returned to St. Helens to live at 243 Leach Lane. He died in St. Helens on the 18th of June 1945 at the age of 78. |
