Biography of John Jolley

HERITAGE NO :
John Jolley

JOLLEY PUBLICAN

John was born in Prescot , Lancashire on the 20th of June, 1869 but the family moved to Warrington just after his birth. His father, William, was a bookkeeper but sadly died when John was a young boy leaving his grandmother, Ann Wilson, to bring up John and his siblings. They lived at 117 Winwick Street, Warrington. John found his way to St. Helens by the age of twenty and set up house in his new town.

John became a mainstay in the team and we have found him playing in 4 matches in April and September 1890. He made his debut on Good Friday, the 4th of April, 1890 in the home game against Ulverston. John was full back that day as the Saints triumphed. For the next two games John was tried out as a centre. On Easter Saturday he was part of the side that defeated Marylebone. One week later he played centre again as the Saints lost to a strong Hunslet team. All three matches took place at the Dentons Green ground, just months before the Saints would move into their new home in Knowsley Road.

Outside rugby John met a local St. Helens girl, Emily Oakes and they were married at Christ Church, Eccleston in October 1893. The couple had six children, all born in St. Helens. John became a publican and the 1911 Census sees him behind the bar of the Cowley Hill Vaults in Cooper Street, St. Helens. John died in the town in October 1926 at the age of 57.
