The Johnson surname was a particular problem for our research team. There were 56 male Johnsons in the area at the time and a good number were of playing age.

We have labelled this chap as Back Johnson because that was his playing position and we wanted to differentiate him from, you guessed it, Forward Johnson. It is a great pity because this Johnson played no fewer than 32 matches for the Saints and really deserves a first name.

His debut was on the 22nd of March 1890 in an away defeat at Wigan. His best performances were in the 1891-2 season. The centre three-quarter scored a try in an away fixture at Rochdale St. Clements on the 27th of February 1892 which helped to secure a drawn match at 7 points apiece. He notched another try against Aspatria to help the Saints to a 6 points to nil scoreline. Importantly he scored the only points, a well taken drop goal, in a tense 4 points to nil victory over Widnes. His last match for the Saints was against Widnes on the 28th of January 1893 when the Saints secured an impressive 5 points to nil victory thanks to a try from Bob Doherty and a goal from Tommy Foulkes.
