Biography of Joe Thompson

HERITAGE NO :
Joe Thompson

TEENAGE TRY OUT

When Joe Thompson was a teenager he was invited down to St. Helens to demonstrate his prowess following glowing reports in the Westmorland press. No doubt, it was captain and ‘football manger’ Billy Cross who kept a close ear to the ground for any talent emerging in his hometown. The influence of Kendal rugby was, of course, extremely strong in the 1890s at Knowsley Road and forwards from this part of the world have always been highly regarded by Saints` fans over the years. Joe Thompson was a real stalwart for the Saints in the Northern Union era, but before he signed for the club he played initially for Kendal Town alongside Billy Ewan and then for Kendal Hornets, representing Westmorland under Rugby Union and Northern Union rules. The History of Football in Kendal tells us that his nickname was `Cowboy` and that he was a `Keen dashing forward, full of muscle and determination; when near the goal line he was very dangerous. He seemed never to tire, and was always on the scent of the ball`.

Joe was born on the 27th of March, 1872 in Kendal. Joe endured a tough upbringing. He was named after his father, who died in 1880 when Joe was just seven years old. It was left to his mother, Jane (nee Robinson) to raise Joe and his sister Margaret Jane (born 1868) and his brother George William (born 1870). Indeed his siblings have proved easier to track than Joe who we believe never married. So it was left to his mother to bring up the family in Westmorland on whatever monies were accrued from being a Charwoman.

Joe played in an away fixture against Wigan on the 22nd of March 1890. The Saints lost that game. It is interesting to note how many of the Kendal clan were lured down top St Helens around Easter time to guest at the Saints. No doubt Billy Cross pulled out all the stops with his Westmorland welcome. On his second Saints’ outing Joe lined up against Kendal on the 16th of December 1893. The away fixture meant that there was no invitation to the Duke of Cambridge after the match but it provided the Club another opportunity to view his talents for a later approach. The Saints won the match by 10 points to nil thanks to tries from Tom Sudlow and Tom Winstanley and a four-pointer drop goal by John Appleton.

When the Saints finally signed Joe Thompson at the end of 1896, he repaid their faith with a career which spanned 262 appearances for St. Helens.
