Biography of William Murphy |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Murphy ONE MATCH MURPHY William was a local lad who was born in St Helens on Christmas Day 1867. He was a half back, sounds familiar? We do not believe that he was a relative of Alexander the Great. His only first team appearance was in the the away fixture at Wigan on the 22nd of March 1890. The Saints lost that particular derby encounter. It is probable that William also played for the Saints’ Reserve side. He married Margaret Jane Chorley in July 1889 and the couple moved to live at 35 Stanhope Street close to the centre of St. Helens. They had two daughters and initially William worked as a general labourer. The family later relocated to the Thatto Heath area of town and in 1911 they were living at 18 Thompson Street. By then William had become a colliery contractor. William died in St Helens in January 1913 at the age of 45 |
