HERITAGE NO : William Campbell SCOTTISH BOTTLE BLOWER William was born in Portobello, Midlothian, Scotland on the 10th of May 1865. His father, Peter was a bottle blower, and moved to St. Helens in the 1880s with his family. At the time St. Helens did attract workers from all over the country to work in the glass, chemical and coal industries. The family set up home at 7 Lyon Street, St. Helens. Their new house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. In his time in St. Helene William did play for the St. Helens A team and the forward got his chance to play for the first team on the 22nd of March 1890. This was an away fixture against Wigan which ended in a defeat for the Saints. William married Janet in Scotland and they had a daughter Elizabeth who was born in St. Helens. The couple returned to live in Scotland and in 1901 William was still blowing bottles in Glasgow. |
