Frank Dooley

LONG WAY FROM CLARE

Frank was a a local lad who was born in St Helens in April 1866. Frank’s parents were Martin and Honora, nee Tuttle. They came over from County Clare in Ireland in the 1860s and settled in Peasley Cross area of St Helens. Martin was a Carter by trade. There were six children in the family and by all accounts they spoke with Irish accents all their lives.in 1881 was 34, Mill Street and Francis was an apprentice grocer aged 15. Frank’s father Martin died in March 1891 after the clan had moved to have moved to 101, New Cross Street.

Frank made his debut on the 15th of February 1890 in the away fixture against Radcliffe. Unfortunately, Frank was not on the winning side that day. He was regarded as a long striding, fast forward. His second and final appearance was on the 29th of September 1890 in an away fixture against Lancaster. Frank ended the match on the losing side.

As the turn of the century approached Frank changed jobs to become a glass bottle maker, an occupation he stuck with he did until he died. The 1901 census reveals that the family had moved once again, this time to 75 Brynn Street, St Helens. Like many other families at the time most residential relocations involved short distances and the extensive use of a handcart.

Frank was the uncle of George Dooley, who played for the Saints, St Helens Recs and Wigan Highfield.

Frank died in St Helens in July 1910 at the age of 44.
