 HERITAGE NO : William Gamble (2) NO RELATION As far as we can determine this William Gamble was not related to the wealthy Chemical Giants family whose three brothers were original players for St. Helens RFC in the mid 1870s. This William was born on the 8th of February 1867 in St. Helens. In 1891 he was resident at 40 Orwell Street, Parr, St. Helens and was employed as a Glassworks labourer. In summer of that year he married the cockney Louisa Duncan and they created a family including eight children. William played five first team matches for the Saints and we can assume that he was a regular forward in the St. Helens RFC A team. His debut was against Askam in a home victory on the 30th of November, 1889. Later, he also featured in games against Wigan, Leigh and Salford. William’s fifth and final outing was on the 26th of September, 1891 when the Saints went down to a surprise home defeat to Birkenhead Wanderers by 2 points to nil. In 1911 he was living in St. John Street in the centre of St. Helens and working as coal miner. He was still a resident of the same street in 1939 when the Census recorded him as a retired Electrician’s labourer. He died in St. Helens in January 1941 at the age of 74, two years before his wife, Louisa, passed away. |
