Biography of John Lightfoot |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Lightfoot EMIGRATED TO CANADA John was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 8th of December 1864. His father, Joseph, was a glass bottle finisher. In 1881 John lived with his parents at 110 Peter Street, St. Helens. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. John followed his father’s footsteps and obtained employment as a glass bottle finisher. He married Elizabeth Appleton in December 1885. They went on to have four children. John played two first team matches for the Saints. We can assume that he also played for the Club’s Reserves team. His debut was against Askam on the 16th of November 1889. His final outing was against Morecambe on the 14th of November 1891. The forward was part of a losing team on both occasions. In November 1915, the Lighfoot family emigrated to Canada. John died in Goderich, Huron, Ontario on the 5th of January 1946. |
