HERITAGE NO : James Clarke WASHER OUT James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1867 . His father, John, was a plate glass cutter. The family lived in a court just off Baxters Lane in Sutton, St. Helens. James was a forward who played regularly for the reserves team at St. Helens. He made his first team debut for the Saints on the 11th of November 1889 in the away fixture against Rochdale St. Clements. Unfortunately he was on the losing side that day. In all he played five matches in November and December 1889. His last outing was part of a Saints’ team that defeated Blackley on the 21st of December 1889. On the 7th of September 1895, whist the Saints were playing their first Northern Union match against Rochdale Hornets, James was busy marrying Ellen Clubb. They would generate a family including 5 children. The couple stayed in the Sutton area and in 1911 they were resident at 1 Massey Street. James was a washer out in a locomotive sheds. He died in St. Helens April in1934 at the age of 66. |
