Biography of George Battersby |
---|
HERITAGE NO : George William Battersby BATT OUT OF HELL George was born in August 1864 in the village of Cork in Carmel, Lancashire. His father, Joseph, was an innkeeper. In 1881 he was recorded by the Genus as a Pupil Teacher living in the Crown Inn, Lower Holker. Soon after this he began his rugby career with the Kendal Hornets. His nickname was ‘Batt’ and played for Kendal Hornets. The History of football in Kendal describes him as follows: “Wing three-quarter, with good turn of speed, plenty of dash and grit, and proved a good acquisition to the club; left Kendal to the regret of many.” The Prescot Reporter and St. Helens General Advertiser of Saturday 24th August 1889 tells us that: “The St. Helens team will be much the same as last year with the exception of Lund at three-quarter, whose place will be filled by Battersby, late of Kendal Hornets and Westmorland County”. The previous report might be interpreted as Billy Lund would be replaced by George Battersby for the entire season, this appears to be misleading. George made his one and only appearance for the Saints on September 7th, 1889. It was a home fixture against Warrington and it resulted in a home defeat. He played centre that day and it is interesting to note other Kendal Hornets associated players in the team namely, Billy Cross, Joe Allen and Jimmy Graham. Perhaps George suffered a serious injury or possibly his mind was on a burgeoning teacher career. In any event George returned north. Eventually George married Rose Emma Wall and his professional call transported him to the Rochdale area. The 1911 Census finds him living at The Hollies, Wardle, Rochdale where his occupation is recorded as a schoolmaster. George died on the 22nd of August 1922 at the age of 58. His death was registered in Droylsden. |
