Biography of William Lucas |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Lucas COAL MINER ENDED UP IN SILKY William was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 10th of August 1865. His father, also named, William, was a coal miner. Young William grew up in Glover Street in the town. William played just one match for the Saints on the 8th of December 1888 in an away fixture against Lancaster. The long journey was well worth the effort as William and the Saints emerged as victors in that match. In the game William played in the full back position which intimates a decent level of speed, safety play and elusiveness. He was also likely to have played for the Saints’ Second team as well. He married Ellen Rotherham in the late 1880s and they went on to have eight children. In 1891 William and Ellen were living at 84 Cyril Street, St. Helens and William had followed his father down the shaft as a coal miner. In 1911 the family moved to live at 48 Siltstone Street, St. Helens. William died in St. Helens in January 1936 at the age of 71. |
