 HERITAGE NO : Unknown Wilson WILSONIAN COINCIDENCE On the 17th of November 1888 the Saints entertained their friends and rivals Leigh at the Cricket Grounds in Dentons Green. The team list for that day contained the names of two players making their debut both with the same surname, Wilson. We know that both players were part of the Saints’ pack of forwards. Further we have identified one of them as Bill Willson who proceeded to play another 51 matches for the St. Helens club. With regards to the match the result ended in the favour of the Saints. So what about the other Wilson? Unfortunately that was ahis only appearance and there is no evidence of a reference to a first name. You probably would guess that in 1888 St. Helens contained quite a few males with that surname. |
