HERITAGE NO : George Frederick Plumpton SAD END George was born in Widnes in 1865. In 1871 he was living with his parents at the Rose and Crown Public House, Mersey View in Widnes. His father, Peter was a blacksmith and the publican of his residence. In 1881 George was living at Moss Bank, Mersey View, Widnes and working as a railway clerk. George played just one match for the Saints. He was at full back on 21st of April 1888 against Kendal Hornets. The Hornets had a very strong team and contained several Westmorland county who would later play for St. Helens. The match was played at the Cricket Grounds at Dentons Green and the men from Westmorland won the spoils. He played regularly for his team in Widnes and was accompanied for the match by Joe Parkinson. Perhaps there had been some temporary recruitment to bolster the Saints’ chances against the men from the North. George married Ann Huskinson Duft who hailed from Nottingham on the 29th of June 1899 and the couple moved into Ash Tree in Mersey View. George was working as a commercial traveller in Wines and Spirits. Sadly, on the 24th of December 1901 George died on a railway near High Green at the age of 36. |
