HERITAGE NO : Joseph Edwin Parkinson FULL LIFE Joe was born in Widnes on the 17th of September 1865. His father, James, was a foreman in a copper works. In 1871 Joe was living with his parents at 7 Simms Cross in Widnes and ten years later the family had moved to Princes Street in Widnes where he was working as a baker’s apprentice. Joe played just one match for the Saints. He was on the wing on 21st of April 1888 against Kendal Hornets. The Hornets had a very strong team and contained several Westmorland county who would later play for St. Helens. The match was played at the Cricket Grounds at Dentons Green and the men from Westmorland won the spoils. He played regularly for his team in Widnes and was accompanied for the match by George Plumpton. Perhaps there had been some temporary recruitment to bolster the Saints’ chances against the men from the North. In 1901 he lived at 11 Bold Street in Widnes and was working as a Club Steward. Ten years later he was mine host at the Red Lion public house in the centre of Prescot. Joe married twice to women named Martha and Edith and was the father of four children. In 1939 he was still in Prescot living at 78 Zion House and managing a general grocery and cafe. He died in Prescot in July 1940 ate the age of 74. |
