Biography of James Forrest |
---|
HERITAGE NO : James Forrest ENDED UP IN BOLTON James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in October 1867. His father, Thomas, was a Glass Fitter. In 1881 his family were living at 11 Rigby Street, St. Helens. Their house was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. James made his debut for the Saints on the 12th of October, 1887 in an away fixture at Barrow. The Saints lost that encounter. His second and final outing occurred on the 2nd of February, 1889 when this rugged forward was part of a team that defeated Eccles at home. It is understood that James played regularly in the St. Helens RFC Reserves team. In the midst of his rugby playing days James married Esther Leyland on Christmas Day 1887. It is curious these days to think that folks would organise their nuptials on that date, but we have quite a few examples to illustrate that this arrangement was very popular in Victorian times. The couple went on to raise seven children. In 1891 the Forrest family were living at 48 Eccleston Street, St. Helens. James was a coal miner by trade and at some point in the 1890s the family moved to live in Unsworth Street, Bolton. He was to remain there for the rest of his life. After a hard life on the rugby field and down the pit, James died in Bolton in July 1932 at the age of 65. |
