Biography of James Barton |
---|
HERITAGE NO : BARTON AT BIRCH James was born in St. Helens in April 1866. His father, also called James, was a labourer. The family were raised in the crowded rows of terraced housing close to the town centre. In 1881 James and his siblings were lodged in Oxford Street in the town, living above a Provisions shop. In the mid 1880s he married Emma Tilley and together they raised 7 children. Emma had been born in Patricroft near Manchester. In 1891 the expanding family were living at 24 Lyon Street, St. Helens, right in the middle of the prime rugby recruitment zone. James made his debut for the Saints in the away fixture against Birch on the 27th of November 1886. The Saints were not victorious that day. It proved to be his only recorded start in the team. He also played in the Reserves team at the Saints. After living in College Street in St Helens for some time, the Bartons moved to live in Ardwick, Manchester. Sadly, James died here at the age of just 44 in June 1910. He left behind his widow Emma who worked as a tailor to feed their children. |
