HERITAGE NO : William Howarth COW KEEPER William was born in Scarisbrick, Lancashire in June 1860. His father, James, was a stone quarryman. In 1881 he was living at Hurlston Green near Scarisbrick and working as a trainee wheelwright. Soon after, William moved to St. Helens. On the 20th of November 1885 William played in the three-quarters against Kendal Hornets. The men from Westmorland were victorious that day. William probably played for the Saints’ Reserve team as well. In April 1883 he married Jane Lineker who hailed from Southport and they went on to have 5 children. In 1891 the young family were living at 77 Raglan Street, St. Helens and William was working as a cow keeper. Within a decade William acquired School Farm in Eccleston and was a fully fledged farmer. He died in St. Helens in June 1908 at the age of 47. |
