Biography of William Yearsley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Joseph Yearsley TRAGIC END IN WORKHOUSE William was born in St. Helens in January 1865. His father, Thomas, was a wheelwright. In 1881 he was living with his parents at 18 Glover Street and was working as a general labourer. William is recorded as playing just one first team game for the Saints. This was the home fixture against Liverpool Rifle Brigade on the 5th of December 1885. The result of that match was not recorded. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. In the late 1880s things started to go wrong for William and the 1891 Census recorded him as a pauper. At some point he did get married because on the 1911 Census he was recorded as a widower. Sadly, the same record informs us that he was blind and living with another 1219 inmates at the Prescot Union Workhouse and Nurses Home. Conditions must have been hell. William died in 1929 at the age of 63. |
