WALES TO WIDNES TO VANCOUVER

Peter was a member of a small group of Saints’ players who moved from the Holywell area of North Wales to South Lancashire, usually to find employment in the coal mines. He was born in Holywell, Flintshire, Wales on the 23rd of December 1867. His father, Thomas was a labourer in the Welsh town.

The forward was to have a great running the Saints’ team following his debut on the 12th of September 1891 in a drawn home match against the auld enemy Wigan at Knowsley Road. In all Peter went on to play 66 matches for the Club and collected four tries in those games. He played his final match in the first team on the 23rd of April, 1893 in the victory over Wigan. His impressive displays were spread over just two seasons and one might speculate that the travelling from his home Widnes became too burdensome.

Peter did not take up employment in the local pits but rather pursued a career in painting and decorating. He resided in Moor Lane, Widnes. Peter married his wife Ann on Christmas Day 1898. Peter and Ann later emigrated to Canada and settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. He died in that city on the 12th of February 1941 at the age of 73.
