Biography of Frederick Fothergill |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Frederick William Fothergill RECORDS UP IN SMOKE The origins of this player have been difficult to ascertain as Frederick moved around the country a great deal and the Census records show differing backgrounds. Indeed, three different Census returns have Frederick being born in Mochdre, Denbighshire, Wales, another has his origin as Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales and a third Census records him being born in October 1858 in Lancaster. That said we do know that he was living with his grandparents in Damiide, Lancaster in 1871. In 1881 he was living with his brother Richard in Middlesbrough and working as a tobacconist. Evidently he moved to St Helens in the early 1880s and continued his work with tobacco. He was living at 52 Hardship Street, St. Helens with his widowed mother. He made his debut for the first team on the 5th of December 1885 against Liverpool Rifle Brigade. Frederick played in the forwards that day. In 1898 he married Laura Ann Digby in Liverpool. They went on to have three children. By 1911 he had relocated to 74 Waterloo Road, Blackpool where he was operating a Boarding House. Frederick died in April 1927 aged 68 and his death was registered in Fylde, Lancashire. |
