Biography of Samuel Bray |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Samuel Bray Rover Samuel had covered many miles before he arrived in the golden pastures of Sutton, St. Helens. He was born in Calstock, Cornwall on the 6th of April, 1862. His father, John, was an iron ore hewer in the south west and when Samuel was a child he moved his family some 350 miles to live and work in Ulverston. In the early 1880s the Bray clan were relocated to South Lancashire. Samuel played two matches for the first team in St. Helens. On the 18th of October 1884 he made a winning debut in the away match against Southport. The following month his winning streak with the Saints was halted as the team were defeated by Walkden. We do not have a comprehensive record of teams from those early years, so it is highly likely that Samuel played further matches for the Saints. Samuel was married twice. He betrothed his first wife, Catherine Bradley, in April 1882 and they went on to have two daughters. Sadly, Catherine died in 1901. He then married Ellen Whittle a few years later and in 1911 the Census shows him living with her and four children at 16 Herbert Street, Sutton, St. Helens. Samuel worked as a coal hewer at a local pit. He was still a Sutton resident in 1939 at 115 Mill Lane. Samuel died in St. Helens in August 1941 at the age of 79. |
