Biography of James Lyon |
---|
HERITAGE NO : ames Lyon ONE OF FOUR SAINTLY BROTHERS James was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 26th of October 1864. His father, William Henry, was a letter carrier. The family lived at 168 Westfield Street close to the town centre. Later James started work as a glass polisher. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. James was one of a remarkable four brothers to play for the Saints. His brother Joe and fellow Saint was his twin, his sibling William Henry was a robust forward for the Club and another brother Thomas played at full back. He made his debut for St. Helens RFC on the 13th of September 1884 in the home victory over Birkdale Free Warriors. This is his only recorded first team match but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Reserves team as well. James married Elizabeth Bold but she died in June 1911. He had changed jobs and was working as a labourer in a copper works. In 1924 he married Sarah Jame Key. James died in St. Helens in March 1935 at the age of 70. |
