Biography of James Grice

HERITAGE NO :
James Grice

EMIGRATED TO CANADA

James was a local lad who was born in St Helens in November 1861. His father, also named William, was a painter. In 1881, the family was living at 60 Raglan Street, St. Helens. At this time, like his father, James was working as a painter. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men.

James made his debut for the Saints on the 13th of September 1884 in a home victory over Birkdale Free Warriors. His brother, William, also played in the same game. Both brothers played in the pack of forwards. He made one more first team match but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well.

In 1901 James was a plumber and painter living at 113 Higher Parr Street in St. Helens. He had married Helen Collins in October 1888 and they had raised two daughters, Jane Ellen and Agnes. We know that some time after this date the Grice family emigrated to Canada to live in the Winnipeg area. Further to this Jane Ellen Grice married David Scott Mills in Winnipeg.
