Biography of Robert Langley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Robert Langley SAINTS AND RECS MINER Robert was born on the 4th of July, 1864 in St. Helens. As a young boy, Robert lived in College Street, St Helens. His father, James was a glassmaker from Warrington. Robert was a labourer and by 1881 his family had moved to ‘Inglasshouse’ at Oldfield Lane, near to City Road, presumably close to his father’s employment. Later Robert took his employment down a local coal pit. He made his debut for St. Helens against Wigan on the 22nd of December 1883. The match that day ended in a honourable draw. His final match that was recorded was the home victory on the 1st March 1884 against St Helens Recs. Robert played full back that day. Like many, it appears that Robert played for both local teams and is photographed with a St. Helens Recs team in the late 1880s. His brother, John, also played for the Saints in the same era. He married Catherine Collins in 1886 and they went on to have three children. The family lived at 45, Albert Street, St. Helens. By 1901, Robert and the family had ‘upped sticks’ and had moved across the country to live in Stanley Street in South Shields!. However, he kept the same job as a coal hewer. His life was not a long one and he sadly died aged just 38 in September 1902 leaving a wife and young family behind. |
