Biography of John Rigby |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Rigby GLASS BOTTLE MAKER John was a local lad who was born in St Helens in July 1861. His father, Joseph, was a glass bottle maker. In 1881 he was living with his parents at 50 Hamer Street in St. Helens. He had followed his father’s employment path and was working as a glass bottle maker as well. He is recorded as playing in just one first team fixture. This took place on the 1st of December 1883 against local rivals Sutton. The venue was Littler’s Field in Dentons Green and the forward ended on the match on the winning side. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. John married Kate in October 1883 and they went on to have four children. In 1891 they were living at 21 Oxford Street in the town. By 1911 they had moved to the salubrious Dentons Green area at 145 Windleshaw Road, the same thoroughfare as the St. Helens Cricket Club where the Saints had played up to 1890. John died in St. Helens in the summer of 1913 at the age of 53. |
