Biography of John Langley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : John Langley VERSATILE GLASSMAKER John was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 10th of February 1862. His father, James was a glassmaker. As a young boy, John lived in College Street, St Helens. His father, James was a glassmaker from Warrington. Robert was a labourer and by 1881 his family had moved to ‘Inglasshouse’ at Oldfield Lane, near to City Road, presumably close to his father’s employment. Later Robert took his employment to the glassworks. His brother, Robert, also played for the Saints and St. Helens Recs in the same era. He made a winning debut on the 3rd of March 1883 against Haigh. That day the St. Helens Rangers were victorious at Littler’s Field, Dentons Green, St. Helens. John was comfortable playing anywhere in the backs. In all he is recorded as playing in 4 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His last recorded match was against Newton-le-Willows on the 9th of February 1884 when the Saints recorded a good away victory. Just prior to his early death he was living in St. Helens with his wife, Ann, and their four children. John died in St. Helens in March 1899 at the age of 37. |
