Biography of William Lea |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Lea BOLIER MAKER AND RIVETER William was a local lad who was born in St Helens in February 1861. His father, John, worked as a labourer. He was a half back who was recorded as playing two matches for the first team in early 1883. His debut was against Everton Valley on the 20th of January, 1883. The Saints were victorious that day at Littler’s Field in Dentons Green. His last recorded match was against the same opponents on the 20th of March, 1883 which also resulted in a home victory for the Saints. Our records are somewhat limited because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period. His number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. In 1881 he was living at 37 Market Street in the centre of St. Helens and working as a boiler maker. Thirty years later he was still living in the town centre at 103 Corporation Street but working as a riveter at that time. He died in St. Helens in April 1934 at the age of 73. |
