Biography of Thomas Hughes |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Thomas Hughes MINER FACED EVERTON VALLEY TWICE Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens in 1860. His father, James, was born in Ireland and worked as an agricultural worker. In 1861 the infant Thomas was living with his parents in Baldwin Street, right in the heart of St. Helens. By 1881 the family had moved a short distance to live at 52 New Cross Street and Thomas has started to work in a local coal mine. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. The forward played two matches for the first team both against the same opponent, Everton Valley. St. Helens Rangers won both encounters and both were played at Littler’s Field in Dentons Green, St. Helens. He is recorded as playing in just these two matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. Thomas married Harriet Roberts on the 11th of November, 1883 in St. Helens and they had one son named John. Thomas died in St. Helens in January 1929 at the age of 69. |
